Exhibition: Julie Cross, ‘Figuring Fairy Tales’ & Kitty Oakley ‘Acting Suspiciously’
Headingley, LS6 2AL
For our November exhibition, two artists, Julie Cross and Kitty Oakley, draw upon the power of the story and the important role it plays in both their lives.
Julie’s semi-autobiographical series touches upon issues such as childhood memory and female empowerment, as well as opening the door on the morals that often sit at the end of these cautionary tales.
Julie crafts the imaginary into a visual experience, distorting the forms on her canvas through the use of a restricted palette and angular brushstrokes. Sometimes, shadows are cast over these familiar stories, leading us away from the idyllic, into something ambiguous or even darker.
Alternatively, Kitty presents us with a series of vibrant illustrative female portraits. She accentuates the dramatic and often exaggerated characteristics of these fictional women, inspired by her self-indulgent love of TV detective shows.
These women are pushed under the spotlight of the voyeuristic and critical eye of Kitty as she explores her relationships with these fictional characters, with both humour and sincerity.
