Extraordinary Women on Blue Plaques
Leeds Civic Trust
17- 19 Wharf Street, Leeds, LS2 7EQ
Learn about these women of achievement featured on Leeds Civic Trust Blue Plaques.
These mostly Leeds-born women have been honoured with Blue Plaques, which are fixed to buildings associated with them and give a summary of their lives and achievements. We’ve brought them together for this photographic exhibition – women such as Ivy Benson, who with her all-girl band toured the UK, Europe and America, becoming the BBC’s resident dance band during WW2; Sue Ryder, Baroness of Warsaw, who did so much to ease the suffering of others; Adelaide Neilson, much-feted Shakesperian actor; Leonara Cohen, prominent Suffragette, arrested for throwing a brick through the Tower of London’s jewel house and Beryl Burton, world record-holder road cyclist, year after year!
