Walking tour: New Dawn at Dusk – reinvention of Leeds South Bank
The Adelphi pub
3-5 Hunslet Road, LS10 1JQ
What’s out there south of the river? A walk to explore an area in transition – with a guide involved in shaping the area.
The tiny hamlets of Holbeck and Hunslet became the cradle of industrial development from the late eighteenth century. Foundries, mills, printworks, and housing crowded the whole of the area south of the river, changing the landscape out of all recognition.
After many years of evolution and prosperity, de-industrialisation set in, leaving deserted sites and buildings. Some of these have been put to new purposes since the late 1980s but much potential remains. Come and see a work in progress and hear some of the stories about how the transformations have been achieved. What is still around the corner?
